Dundee City Council area is one of the 32 council areas in Scotland. This council area is divided into 29 distinct electro wards each ward represented by an elected councilor. Elections to the council occurs at an interval of four years, with the last election held on 4th May 2017. The next election is expected in the year 2011.

In terms of size, it has an area of 60 km2 hence ranked position last among the Council areas of Scotland. It has a population density of 2,472 people per km2. Dundee City, the 4th largest city in Scotland is governed by Lord Provost; the Civic Head and chair of the council. The incumbent Lord Provost is Ian Borthwick. The incumbent council’s Political head i.e. the Leader of the council is called John Alexander.  It has two members of the Scottish Parliament and two members of Parliament of the UK.

Of important to note is the existence of two professional football clubs in Dundee City. These are Dundee United and Dundee F.C both of which have their stadiums next to each other.

Dundee City was awarded status of Royal Burgh in the year 1292 when John Balliol was being coroneted as the Scotland’s King. Two mottos exist for Dundee City. These are; “with thought and purity” and “Gift of God”. The former motto is the one mostly in use for civic purposes. Dundee City enjoys an oceanic climate.

There are notable landmarks in Dundee City i.e. Firth of Tray (where river Tay, the largest river in Scotland empties its water) and The Law (a large hill to the North of the City Centre) are the two major Landmarks in Dundee City. The most recent landmark in Dundee City is the the University of Dundee’s Tower building that has a height of 43 meters. Further, several Castles can be found in Dundee City. In the education sector, two notable universities are located in Dundee City. These universities are University of Dundee and University of St Andrews. The University of St Andrews is a home to the following other learning institutions. These are Dundee Law School, the teacher Training College, UK’s top Medical Schools and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. Also in Dundee City, there are a total of 37 primary state schools and 9 secondary state schools.
